Hi, I am Stuart Talley. I am the partner at Kershaw, Cook & Talley responsible for the pharmaceutical litigation group at our firm. The reason I am doing this video is to provide some information about a new case we are investigating regarding the drug Abilify.
Abilify is an antipsychotic medication prescribed to many people throughout the United States for depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression). Recent studies have linked this drug to compulsive gambling and gambling-related behaviors. Abilify activates the pleasure and reward centers in the brain, leading to a lack of impulse control and compulsive behaviors.
This is not the first drug in which we have seen a side effect of compulsive gambling. The drug Mirapex had similar problems when it was on the market several years ago. Many people are embarrassed to tell their doctors or loved ones about the compulsive behaviors. So, it is an issue that is not readily noticeable and does not get noticed until there is a pattern. This is the situation with Abilify.
Doctors began noticing several of their patients on this medication had problems with gambling. Some doctors published studies about the connection with the drug and gambling. In turn, other doctors read those studies and started looking for those connections in their patients. We have now reached the point where there is evidence that Abilify can cause problems with compulsive gambling.
In Europe and Canada, they have added warnings to the labels on the medication. However, they have not added this warning in the United States. A lot of people called us and said they went on this drug. They took it for a while and then suddenly they had irresistible urges they could not control. These urges have had a devastating impact on their lives.
We’ve heard stories of people being arrested, people spending 48 hours straight in a casino, and impulse bought extravagant purchases. People losing everything from financial ruin, losing their jobs, and even divorces. These are serious problems with serious consequences. It was as if they changed overnight. The worst part is that people had no idea that this medication had any role in this process.
If you have taken Abilify, and had problems with gambling, or any other compulsive behavior, feel free to give us a call, or you can go to our website and fill out our online form.
