Rancho Cordova- There was major traffic congestion on westbound Highway 50 last night after a crash involving a big rig led to a fire. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident occurred around 4PM near Sunrise Boulevard. The big rig was speeding when it crashed into a SUV and car that had pulled onto the side of the road. All three vehicles ignited. Before the crash, the big rig did not seem like it was slowing down, as reported by KCRA. One person suffered minor injuries but refused transportation to the hospital. Flames spread to nearby grass and was contained by firefighters.

Although there are no further details available, the information provided indicates that traffic had been backed up as a result of the crash allegedly caused by the big rig. Therefore, the driver of the big rig is potentially at fault for causing this collision for driving at a speed that was unsafe for traffic conditions. Big rigs represent a danger on our roadways because of their size. According to the California Vehicle Code (CVC), the average big rig, semi-truck, semi-trailer truck, tractor trailer, and 18-wheeler traveling on California roads can weigh up to 80,000 pounds and can be as much as 75 feet long, while the average passenger vehicle weighs only 4,000 pounds.

Truck Accidents

Truck accidents often result in severe injuries or death. The CHP reports there are roughly 5,000 injuries from semi-truck accidents, with approximately 250 deaths each year in California. These accidents are avoidable if the driver pays attention to traffic and roadway conditions, drives at a safe speed, and maintains a safe distance behind the vehicle ahead. Big-rig crashes resulting in injury or fatality are potentially caused by the following:

  • Excessive/unsafe speed
  • Distracted driving
  • Driver fatigue
  • Improper loading
  • Drug or alcohol use
  • Aggressive or reckless driving
  • Mechanical failure
  • Lack of training or experience
